Abstract

The etymology of canid names in Russian is discussed: mangut (raccoon dog), karaganka (karagan), lisa (fox). The name mangut was borrowed from the Buryat language, and the karaganka appeared as a result of a mistake of P.S.Pallas. According to the offered explanation, lisa can be traced back to the ancestral form *ropasa. The set of modifications of this form does not include the Romance names traced back to Latin vulpes.
