On the semantics of the old English word «mete»

Abstract


The article provides a detailed analysis of the semantics of the compound words containing an Old English word mete as a stem. As one of the components of the pattern n + n → N, this word presented the basis for generating compound words with new semantics. On the basis of the Old English lexicon it is possible to single out several lexical groups of words belonging to the semantic field «food, meal» either in their direct or indirect meanings.
