Abstract


The article deals with the distribution and the frequency of occurrence of guttural consonants in 200 world languages. The guttural group of consonants includes all sorts of back consonants: velar, uvular, pharyngeal and laryngeal. The languages of the following taxa over-exploit the guttural consonants: Australian Aboriginal languages, Sino-Tibetan, Caucasian, Afro-Asiatic, Samoyedic, Austronesian, American Indian, and Paleo-Asiatic.
