Ergative Case and Verbal Agreement: Explaining Dialectal Variations in Nepali
Abstract
This paper demonstrates that Darjeeling Nepali, a «dialect» or variety of Nepali exhibits ergative patterns and verbal agreement paradigms that differ from those in the mainland variant. It has overt case-marked ergative subjects that optionally trigger verbal agreement, unlike mainland Nepali. We provide a syntactic analysis for these dialectal variations.
